WHO

Membership of the Malaysia International Film Awards is reserved for accomplished professionals shaping the future of cinema and series. The Academy brings together artists across sixteen dedicated branches — from actors and directors to screenwriters, cinematographers, producers, and industry representatives — reflecting the full spectrum of creative and technical excellence behind the screen.

HOW

Membership is by invitation only. Candidates must be sponsored by two existing members of the branch they aspire to join, ensuring that each new member is recognized by their peers for outstanding achievement in the film industry.

Nominees for the Malaysia International Film Awards are automatically considered for membership and do not require sponsorship.

Each year, sponsorships and nominations are carefully reviewed by the relevant branch committees. Their recommendations are presented to the Academy’s Board of Governors, which makes the final decision on issuing invitations to join the Academy.

Membership proposals are reviewed annually in the spring. The deadline for sponsorship submissions for the current cycle is Friday, February 28, 2025.

SPONSORSHIP INSTRUCTIONS

Sponsoring a candidate is a mark of trust and a commitment to the integrity of the Academy. Sponsors should ensure that each candidate has demonstrated exceptional artistic or professional achievement in the film industry before proceeding.

• Candidates for branch membership must be sponsored by two members of that specific branch.

• Candidates for the Artists’ Representatives branch must be sponsored by one member of that branch and one additional sponsor from any other branch.

• Artists’ Representatives may sponsor only candidates within their own branch.

NEW MEMBERSHIP PROCESS

The sponsorship process begins when one of the sponsors submits the candidate’s name via the Academy’s Member Portal.

Once both sponsors have completed their part, the candidate will receive an invitation to provide additional information. The Academy’s Membership Relations team will follow up if further details are required.

Each year, all candidates endorsed by their branch’s executive committee are presented to the Board of Governors, which grants final approval and extends formal invitations to join Malaysia International Film Awards Academy.
